Phiewer 6.3 – Stability update with new features and bugfixes

Version 6.3 is an update that responds to your feedback first and foremost. Many of the changes are based directly on reports, bug reports, and feature requests from users. Thanks to everyone who tested, reported, and suggested.

The focus is on stability, a smoother sorting workflow, and small improvements that make a difference in daily use. Whether you use Phiewer as an image viewer, as a culling tool to sort your photos, or simply as a fast alternative to Preview.app.

Better Culling: Favorites, Navigation & Sorting

Sorting through photos is one of the most common workflows in Phiewer: quickly going through a large set of images, keeping the best, and discarding the rest. Version 6.3 makes this process smoother in several ways:

  • Drag & drop images directly to your favorites in the sidebar.
  • Favorites can now be reordered, so you can build your selection in whatever order makes sense for your project.
  • Optional auto-scroll to the current thumbnail, so you keep your bearings even in large folders with hundreds of files.
  • Filenames are now sorted naturally (DAY 1, DAY 2, DAY 10 instead of DAY 1, DAY 10, DAY 2). Sorting by date now also considers the EXIF capture date, which is especially useful when importing from multiple cameras.

Together, these changes make reviewing and culling photos noticeably more pleasant, especially in larger folders.

New File Management Tools

Phiewer 6.3 adds Move/Cut (CMD+X) as a new function, so you can quickly relocate images to different folders while sorting. Drag & drop with multi-selection now works correctly, and the context menu shows the number of selected files when deleting.

Small additions, but if you regularly sort through hundreds of photos, they make a noticeable difference.

Improved PDF Display

PDF rendering has been reworked. Multi-page documents now display with sharper text, correct scrolling behavior, and proper zooming. If you have PDFs alongside your images in a folder, you'll notice the difference right away.

Interface, Display & Bugfixes

Settings are now more clearly organized into sections for Display & Controls. The sidebar can optionally be made narrower, the eject icon on drives is now always visible, and keyboard shortcuts display correctly across different keyboard layouts. Also new: video thumbnails now optionally autoplay directly in gallery and folder views, and animated GIFs and WebP files are also shown animated in the overview.

Under the hood, version 6.3 also fixes constant reloads on certain network drives, improves map coordinates from EXIF data, and addresses several drag & drop and detail view issues. RAW (.DNG) image display has been fixed as well.

Built for Photographers Who Sort

Most users spend the majority of their time in Phiewer reviewing, comparing, and culling images. Phiewer is not just an image viewer, it's a culling tool. Version 6.3 was built with exactly that workflow in mind.
